Pastor Search-Frequently Asked Questions
How long will this take?
This process will take approximately 12-18 months. The strategic planning process will take approximately six months, followed by a minimum six month candidating process. Ideally, a full ministry profile will be created by January and we can move forward to gather a search committee as stated by the by-laws
The congregation will then be presented with one candidate at a time per the by-laws. We want to "move at the speed of Jesus" to make the right hire, not a quick hire.
The timeline depends on a variety of factors that make the answer to this question difficult to answer. However, we can assure you that we are working diligently to move the process forward and trust that God will bring us the right candidate in His perfect timing.
What is strategic planning? What does this have to do with hiring a pastor?
Strategic planning is a process by which churches evaluate and discern God's specific vision for their local church body. It is expressed through developing a mission statement, vision and identifying core values. We’re discussing our strengths and weaknesses to help us figure out where God wants us to go in the future. It's important that we do this well and spend the time to seek God as we discern where He wants us to go as a church. What is our mission here in Salem? What is God's vision for us over the next season for the body at West Hills? These discussions help us get clarity so we can not only pick the right Senior Pastor, but also help us grow towards Gods plan for West Hills.
What can't we have a permanent pastor right now?
It is important for the church to know who they are, where God is leading them and what their needs are to get there, particularly after a long tenured pastor. This is an analysis phase that will help us develop a profile for the next senior pastor.
What is the role of the interim pastor?
The Role of the Interim pastor seeks to be a "Voice between voices" bridging the gap between Senior Pastors. This allows the church time to reflect and evaluate their identity and develop a senior Pastor Profile for the hiring process
During the Interim Process the role of the interim pastor is to be the primary teacher of the Word, guide, lead and equip the staff and Elders and help guide the Senior Pastor Candidating process.
How is the pastor search committee selected? Has the Pastor search committee been chosen yet?
Elders will appoint a Search Committee according to the church constitution with at least 5 members with at least one elder. This committee has been selected, names of the members can be found here.
